Want to get fantastic photos of birds of prey, both flying and static? My Birds of Prey Photography workshop is just the thing!
A day's practical photography with a range of birds such as Kestrel, Tawny Owl, Barn Owl, and Bald Eagle, this is a great way to get those shots that you just couldn't capture in the wild. We'll look at composition, focusing, panning and much more, in a beautiful location in the heart of Essex.
This is a 100% practical photography workshop, structured to give us the maximum time with the birds. We will meet for orientation and a brief introduction, discussing what we will cover during the workshop. We'll then get started, using either the woodland and bluebells at Hanningfield, or the barns, woodland, and beautiful walled garden at Cressing Temple, to give us a wide range of styles and settings for the birds. There are restaurants at both sites, so we can have a delicious lunch before continuing to photograph the birds throughout the afternoon.
Throughout the day I will provide guidance on how best to set your camera up, discussing angles to shoot from, composition ideas, and anything else you need help with. As we'll be shooting both in and outdoors, there will be lots to take in regarding settings, using the correct ISOs, white balance and so on, and we'll also cover focusing modes and how to control focus points, especially useful for those tricky flight shots!
The barns and dense woodland allow us to carry on shooting should the weather not be in our favour. There will be a maximum of ten participants on these workshops, so everyone will have plenty of 1-2-1 time with me, and as usual I will not be racing off at the end of the session, so if you wish to stay on to chat or discuss any part of the day, that won't be a problem at all.
Ideally participants will be using a DSLR or Compact System Camera with interchangeable lenses, as these cameras generally have quicker focusing and greater control, but any camera will be fine for the static photos.

We'll spend the day taking photos of various bird of prey species such as Kestrel, Barn Owl, Tawny Owl, Buzzard, or Bald Eagle (the birds present during the workshop cannot be guaranteed, and are dependent on bird condition and availability). A variety of posed and flight shots will be taken, spending a good amount of time with each bird, with a maximum of 6-7 different birds being photographed throughout the day; this will depend on the group's wishes and needs on the day.
The workshop will start with a short introduction, explanation of the day, introduction to the Eden Falconry team, and orientation, then we get to 'work' photographing the birds. We will break for lunch around midday - lunch is not included, feel free to bring a packed lunch, or get something in the onsite restaurant. There will then be further photography through the afternoon, and you will then have the option to stay on and have a chat and look through the photos from the day, or make your way home.
A reasonable knowledge of your camera would be useful, but I will help you get the right settings for each situation, with 1-2-1 tuition available for everyone throughout the workshop, as well as group instruction when appropriate.
The Birds of Prey Photography Workshop costs £100 per person, with a maximum of 10 participants.
The workshop runs for 6 hours (including lunch break), and is a purely practical photography session, with a mixture of outdoor and indoor locations. Everyone gets some 1-2-1 time, which can be used to address any aspect of the camera, photography, or anything else you wish to discuss. Please note that the start time may vary depending on the venue.

The site at Cressing Temple Barns is even and fairly flat, with just a few gentle slopes to access some areas. We will tailor the day to suit the mobility of the participants.
The area used at Hanningfield Reservoir is woodland with unsurfaced paths, unsuitable for mobility scooters or those unsteady on their feet. The main area used is around 400m from the car park and restaurant, which has full disabled access.
