My Birds of Prey workshops have proved extremely popular, and I also offer private tuition with the birds, which include Tawny Owl, Long-eared Owl, Barn Owls, Kestrel, Goshawk, Eagle Owl, Bald Eagle, Harris Hawk and more.
These private tuition sessions allow me to tailor the experience to the photographer, which might mean they choose the birds we photograph (subject to availability), or simply that they need more time spent on a particular aspect that can't be covered to the same extent in a group workshop setting.
Working closely with Andy and Lisa of Eden Falconry, the sessions take place at Cressing Temple Barns, near Braintree and Witham in Essex, which give us a variety of habitats and settings for the birds, from woodland to barns, open spaces to a Tudor Walled Garden. There's even a Tiptree Tea Room on site!
It's usually a 4 hour session, but this can be varied depending on your requirements and experience, the session being tailored to ensure we cover what you want, and to help you get the best from the session.
I would normally expect us both to be taking pictures and comparing them to see how different viewpoints, lens choice etc. has an effect on the outcome. Whatever you want to address is fine, including the basics of what your camera does, or looking at specific techniques. If you're a complete beginner, I would suggest a 'Know The Basics' workshop, or a 1-2-1 without the birds, would be a good idea prior to booking a private session with the birds.
You can use any type of camera for these sessions, but some are more suited than others. In general, a DSLR or Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens camera is going to do better than a Compact or Bridge camera with the flight shots, but static birds can be photographed well whatever camera you're using.
I am available weekends* or weekdays, for any 4 hours during the day, though normally I book a 10am to 2pm session. Please be aware that we also have to consider Eden Falconry's availability, so some flexibility regarding dates is likely to be required.
If that's of interest, let me know and we'll see when we can schedule you in!
* Weekend availability is limited, if you would like to book a tuition session on a Saturday or Sunday please don't be surprised if the majority of dates offered are 3 or more months away.
Whatever you want! It's private tuition, designed around what you want and need. Tell me what you want to learn, and I'll do my very best to get you up to speed. Flight shots, portraits, abstracts, they're all feasible in a private session.
As private tuition is tailored to your needs, your current knowledge isn't really a concern, although you'll get the best from the session if you've already got a basic understanding of how your camera works.
The rate for 3 and 4 hour private photography tuition sessions is shown below:
3 hours | 4 hours | |
One participant: | £210 | £245 |
Two participants: | £335 | £390 |
Three participants: | £420 | £510 |
The birds of prey private photography tuition I offer is based on a 3 or 4 hour session, and is usually along these lines...
We'll probably photograph 3 or 4 different birds during this time, and for most people this is a purely practical photography session, so we'll do portrait shots of a bird in a suitable environment, then if it's one that flies, we'll fly it, and do our very best to get good shots of it in the air.
We'll repeat this throughout the session, with advice and tuition along the way as required.
I have had customers as young as 11 benefiting from private tuition, and would be happy for younger photographers to enjoy some tuition too. The other end of the age spectrum is not a problem either!
Children under the age of 16 years must be accompanied by a designated, appropriate adult; this may be a family member, nanny or chaperone. If the appropriate adult is not receiving tuition no extra charge will be incurred.
The Birds of Prey private photography tuition sessions take place at Cressing Temple Barns, which are situated between Braintree and Witham, in Essex.
There is free parking available, and a Tiptree Tea Room in case you wish to have lunch there after the session, or grab a coffee during it!
Give me a ring, or email me, and we'll book you in! See the Contact page for details.
Yes you can, just follow the steps for 'How do I book?' above, and simply state that you're booking it for someone else to attend. It's probably easier though if you buy them a gift voucher and then they can choose a date for their tuition session.
If you need to cancel your booking, please contact me as soon as possible.
The session may need to be cancelled if the weather is unsuitable for the birds. As much notice as possible will be given if this is the case.
The site at Cressing Temple Barns is even and fairly flat, with just a few gentle slopes to access some areas. We will tailor the day to suit the mobility of the participants.
If you have any concerns, please contact me to discuss so that we can try to make things as straightforward as possible for you.
Send us your questions and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
