Join me for a practical photography workshop at Call of the Wild Zoo in South Woodham Ferrers, where we meet all sorts of animals, from butterflies to lemurs, lizards to vultures!
Throughout the day, we explore different areas of this small zoo, including the tropical house with its butterflies, lizards, and the wonderful Digby, who's an armadillo, the small mammal area, with meerkats, lemurs, and servals, and the birds of prey, where we might meet owls, hawks, or vultures!
This is a 100% practical photography workshop, structured to give us the maximum time with the animals. The day will consist of a brief introduction, followed by a full day of practical photography in the Zoo, with exclusive time spent with the Lemurs, Servals, birds of prey, and a selection of animals in the Tropical House. Everyone gets some 1-2-1 time to address any issues, concerns, or subjects specific to them.
Throughout the day I will provide guidance on how best to set your camera up, discussing angles to shoot from, composition ideas, and anything else you need help with. As we'll be shooting both in and outdoors, there will be lots to take in regarding settings, using the correct ISOs, white balance and so on, and we'll also cover focusing modes and how to control focus points, especially useful for those tricky flight shots!
The various areas of the zoo allow us to carry on shooting should the weather not be in our favour. There will be a maximum of eight participants on these workshops, so everyone will have plenty of 1-2-1 time with me, and as usual I will not be racing off at the end of the session, so if you wish to stay on to chat or discuss any part of the day, that won't be a problem at all.
Suitable for all types of cameras, from compact to DSLR, and for all abilities, including absolute beginners and upwards.
Payment in advance is required to secure your place, this being made through the Call Of The Wild website via the links below.
Please read the FAQs below to ensure you know everything you need to about the day.
If you would like advanced warning of forthcoming workshops, subscribe to my Newsletter, and book up as soon as you get the chance!
I also offer private photography tuition, so that you can receive my undivided attention all year round.

We'll spend the day taking photos of various animal species both in the Tropical House and in outside enclosures. We look at techniques for better close-ups, effective portraits of animals and birds, lighting, composition, and more, with some exclusive access to the Lemurs, Servals, and lizards or similar in the Tropical House.
We will break for lunch around midday - lunch is not included, feel free to bring a packed lunch, or get something at the onsite catering outlet, with a 15% discount. There will then be further photography through the afternoon to the finish at 3.30pm, and you will then have the option to stay on and have a chat, or make your way home.
A reasonable knowledge of your camera would be useful, but not essential, and I will help you get the right settings for each situation, with 1-2-1 tuition available for everyone throughout the workshop, as well as group instruction when appropriate. Absolute beginners are welcome, but please bear in mind this is not a 'learn to control your camera' workshop, so we won't be able to go too in-depth if that is your need.
The Zoo Photography Workshop costs £95 per person, with a maximum of 8 participants.
The workshop runs for 5 ½ hours (including lunch break), and is a purely practical photography session, with a mixture of outdoor and indoor locations. Everyone gets some 1-2-1 time, which can be used to address any aspect of the camera, photography, or anything else you wish to discuss.
No. I have had customers as young as 10 on a standard workshop and have even run workshops for children's groups, with an age range of 7-11. The other end of the age spectrum is no hindrance either!
Children under the age of 16 years must be accompanied by a designated, appropriate adult; this may be a family member, nanny or chaperone.
Please click the event date and location above (under 'Forthcoming Workshops') to take you direct to the relevant booking page on the Call of the Wild website.
